Public Participation

Invitation to Participate: Draft Western Cape Integrated Waste Management Plan 2027–2032

The Western Cape Government is currently developing its 4th Generation Western Cape Integrated Waste Management Plan (WC IWMP) for 2027–2032 and is inviting members of the public, organisations, businesses and other interested stakeholders to participate in the consultation process.

The Integrated Waste Management Plan is essentially the Province’s five-year strategy for how waste should be managed across the Western Cape. It looks at the current state of waste management, identifies problems and gaps, and sets out priorities, actions and targets for improving waste services. The draft plan addresses matters such as waste collection and disposal, recycling and waste diversion, illegal dumping, landfill capacity, waste infrastructure, environmental and public-health impacts, the circular economy, job creation and improved compliance. The proposed plan is built around four main goals: increasing public participation and responsible waste behaviour; improving waste-management planning, services and infrastructure; moving towards a circular economy through waste reduction, reuse, recovery and recycling; and strengthening compliance and enforcement.

Why is the public being consulted?
Public participation forms an important part of developing the plan. The intention is to give communities and other stakeholders an opportunity to review the proposals, identify issues that may have been overlooked, and submit comments, recommendations or objections before the plan is finalised. The Waste Act also requires the development of an Integrated Waste Management Plan to include public participation and consultation. WCIWMP_PPP Workshop Invite

The Draft WC IWMP 2027–2032 is open for public comment until 19 October 2026. Template for Comments - Draft W… Public participation workshops are also being held across the Western Cape during October, where the findings and proposals contained in the draft plan will be presented and stakeholders will have an opportunity to provide their input directly. Members of the public are encouraged to read the draft plan, attend a workshop where possible, and submit comments or recommendations to help shape how waste will be managed in the Western Cape over the next five years.
